In 1974, Kiran Mazumdar Shaw began working professionally as a trainee brewer at Carlton & United Beverages. In 1978, she joined as Learner Administrator with Biocon Biochemicals Restricted in Ireland. Around the same time, Kiran Mazumdar Shaw established Biocon India in a joint effort with Biocon Biochemicals Restricted, with a capital of Rs.10,000. She at first dealt with numerous issues in regards to assets for her business. Because she was a woman entrepreneur—a rare occurrence at the time—and because biotechnology was a completely new field at the time, banks were hesitant to provide her with a loan.
