Father’s Day was celebrated for the first time in 1910 but it became an official holiday six decades later. Eventually, the day spread across the US as people took the opportunity to honor the father figures in their life. It is observed by people giving gifts or spending time with their fathers honoring the men in their lives.

Father’s Day was inspired by Mother’s Day which became a commercial holiday in 1908 and was made official by 1914 by President Woodrow Wilson. Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May.

After a day was devoted to mothers, Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane was inspired to create a similar day for fathers. It is to mention that as per reports, Dodd was brought up by a widower with 14 children. Therefore, she decided to honor the service of fathers. Subsequently, Dodd also gained support of the community which led to the celebration of the first Father’s Day on June 19, 1910. It gradually spread to the rest of the US and in 1916, Wilson recognised the holiday.

Remarkably, Father’s Day became a permanent holiday in the US after President Richard Nixon signed it into law in 1972.
