Conceived: April 10, 1894 Success: Established the underpinnings of the Birla Domain; the person who established the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).


Ghanshyam Das Birla is regarded as an industry titan in India. He was the one who established the Birla Empire’s foundations. G.D. Birla had many sides to his personality. He advised Gandhiji on economic strategies and was a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi. He contributed the most to the Indian National Congress prior to independence. Ghanshyam Das Birla was the organizer behind the Alliance of Indian Offices of Business and Industry (FICCI). In addition, he is well-known for building Birla Mandirs.


Brought into the world on April 10, 1894, G.D. Birla, was a local of Pilani. Shiv Narayan Birla’s grandfather practiced traditional marwari banking. During the First World War, Ghanshyam Das Birla entered the business world. Later, he established Keshoram Cotton Mills and a cotton mill in Sabzi Mandi. Alongside cotton factories he expanded to jute business and moved his base to Calcutta city in Bengal, the world’s biggest jute delivering district. To the dismay of well-established European merchants, he established Birla Jute Mills in Bengal.


With an investment of Rs. 50 lakhs, the Birla Siblings Restricted was shaped and a factory was set up in Gwalior. G.D. Birla established sugar and paper mills in the 1930s. He started Hindustan Motors in the 1940s, which was his first venture into the automobile industry. Ghanshyam Das Birla invested in tea and textiles following independence through a series of acquisitions of European businesses. He expanded into cement, chemicals, rayon, and steel tubes as well.


Ghanshyam Das Birla additionally established a few instructive organizations. Today, Birla Institute of Technology and Sciences (BITS) Pilani is one of the best engineering schools in India. Additionally, he established numerous hospitals, planetariums, and temples. Ghanshyam Das Birla kicked the bucket in 1983 at 90 years old. The G.D. Birla Award for Scientific Research was established in his honor to recognize scientists for their contributions to various scientific research fields.
