Every year, Teacher’s Day is celebrated on 5 September. It’s a day dedicated to teachers and the role they play in shaping their students’ lives. The day commemorates the birth anniversary of scholar and Bharat Ratna recipient Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who was born on this day in 1888.

About Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan

  • Dr Radhakrishnan was born in a family in Tiruttani (Tamil Nadu) in 1888. He had been a great teacher, philosopher, author and a celebrated politician.
  • He was the first Vice President of the independent India (1952–1962)
  • He was also the second President of India from 1962 to 1967.
  • Dr Radhakrishna received many accolades. He received knighthood in 1931. In 1954, he was awarded Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in India. He also got honorary membership of the British Royal Order of Merit in 1963.
  • He wrote a book, ‘The Philosophy of Rabindranath Tagore’ which attracted global attention to Indian philosophy.

About Teacher’s Day 2021- Shiksha Parv

  • The Ministry of Education commemorated the Shiksha Parv from September 5th to 17th to honour teachers’ accomplishments and to advance the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
  • On this day Five new Projects were launched.
    • Indian Sign Language Dictionary-  It’s an audio and text embedded sign language video for the hearing impaired, in conformity with Universal Design of Learning. It has a total word count of 10,000.
    • Talking Books: These are audiobooks especially launched for the visually challenged.
    • School Quality Assessment and Accreditation Framework (SQAA)- 
      • It’s a quality initiative proposed by the CBSE to give worldwide attainment parameters as standards in schools connected with it.
      • It is meant to take care of the lack of a shared scientific framework for areas like curricula, teaching, assessment, infrastructure, inclusive practices, and governance.
    • NISHTHA teachers’ training programme for NIPUN Bharat- 
      • NISHTHA is a capacity building programme, whose aim is to improve the quality of school education through integrated teacher training.
      • The purpose of launching NIPUN was to ensure that every child in the country necessarily attains foundational literacy and numeracy (FLN) by the end of Grade 3, by 2026-27.
    • Vidyanjali 2.0 Portal
      • The Vidyanjali Scheme, launched in 2017 is a revolutionary programme that focuses on improving literacy in government schools by providing volunteer teachers.
      • The aim of the new scheme is to facilitate education volunteers, donors and CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) contributors for school development.

About World Teachers Day

  • World Teachers’ Day is observed on 5th October every year.
  • The day is celebrated globally to recognise and celebrate the works of educators including teachers, researchers and professors.
  • It is celebrated to commemorate the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers.
  • Also called International Teachers Day, it is organised  by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) in partnership with United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), International Labour Organisation (ILO) and Education International.
  • The theme for World Teachers’ Day 2021 was “Teachers at the heart of education recovery”.
  • World’s Teacher’s Day 2021 was a five-day event that showcased the effect of the pandemic on the teaching profession, underlined effective and promising policy responses and aimed to establish the steps that are needed to ensure that teaching personnel develop their full potential.
